Why Fertility Testing Is Important

Fertility testing is an essential first step in understanding the causes of infertility and creating an individualized treatment plan.
It helps to:

  • Identify underlying medical conditions
  • Assess reproductive potential in both women and men
  • Guide treatment choices such as IUI, IVF, or surgery
  • Increase the chance of successful pregnancy

Testing is recommended for:

  • Couples trying to conceive for more than 6–12 months without success
  • Women over age 35 who have been trying for 6 months or more
  • Individuals with known reproductive health concerns
  • Patients planning to undergo assisted reproductive technology (ART)

Female Fertility Testing

Evaluating ovulation, ovarian reserve, uterine health, and fallopian tube function.

A. Imaging and Structural Assessments

  1. Transvaginal Ultrasound (TVUS)
    High-resolution imaging to evaluate ovaries, uterus, and early follicle growth.
  2. Sonohysterography / Sonohysterogram (SIS)
    Uses sterile saline to expand the uterine cavity, helping detect fibroids, polyps, or adhesions.
  3. Sonohysterogram with Contrast (HyCoSy / Foam Sonography)
    Adds contrast agents to assess fallopian tube patency without X-ray exposure.
  4. Hysterosalpingography (HSG)
    X-ray imaging with contrast dye to evaluate the uterus and fallopian tubes.
  5. Hysteroscopy
    Minimally invasive camera inspection of the uterine cavity.
  6. Laparoscopy
    Keyhole surgery to inspect pelvic organs, often used to detect endometriosis or adhesions.
  7. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
    Detailed imaging for complex pelvic conditions.
  8. Computed Tomography (CT)
    Occasionally used to assess pelvic or abdominal pathology.

B. Functional and Hormonal Tests

  1. Basal Hormone Test (FSH, LH, Estradiol, AMH)
    Measures hormone levels on day 2–4 of the menstrual cycle to assess ovarian function.
  2. Ovarian Reserve Testing
    Combines AMH, FSH, E2, and Antral Follicle Count to predict egg supply.
  3. Endometrial Biopsy
    Small tissue sample from the uterine lining to check for hormonal effects or inflammation.

Male Fertility Testing

Assessing sperm quality, reproductive tract health, and hormonal function.

A. Semen and Structural Assessments

  1. Semen Analysis
    Evaluates sperm count, motility, and morphology.
  2. Sperm DNA Fragmentation Test
    Measures sperm DNA integrity for better embryo development prediction.
  3. Scrotal Ultrasound
    Checks for varicoceles, blockages, or other testicular issues.
  4. Transrectal Ultrasound (TRUS)
    Assesses prostate and seminal vesicles for structural abnormalities.

B. Functional and Hormonal Tests

  1. Male Hormone Panel
    Includes FSH, LH, Testosterone, Prolactin to evaluate hormonal balance.
  2. Genetic Testing
    Identifies genetic causes of infertility, such as Y-chromosome microdeletions or CFTR mutations.
  3. Testicular Biopsy
    Determines if sperm production is occurring when no sperm is found in semen.
